Writer’s block is the mortal bane of all scribes, from the published masters to the aspiring novelist. However, before you can battle the block, you need to reflect on the why!
1. DARKNESS DESCENDS OVER YOUR MIND LIKE A THOUSAND MIDNIGHTS!
When many writers have taken a seat at the keyboard to start on that Great American Novel, ideas swirl in their minds until the start to peck out those first few words. Then is happens. More accurately, nothing happens. Why? As much as writing is an artistic expression, it is also a craft. This means that most forms of writing have defined structure, i.e., in that case of the novel you have to worry about the exposition, theme, dialogue, etc. If not familiar with these elements, it is difficult to get your story out.
Even when you master literary conventions, sometimes you know what you want to write about, but you don’t have those thoughts organized. Also, a writer may have the picture in mind, but writing can often be about the little things. Focusing on that big picture can be paralyzing.
2. YOU ARE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!
As your characters become more real, they may take on a life of their own. Sometimes, this may fly in the face of your well planned plot. So what can you do? Well, you and your character can sit pouting and unmoving, or you can follow them for a while and see where they lead you. If you like where they take you, thanks the muse on shoulder. If not, highlight that text and delete the dead-end. You will find more often than not that your characters know the world you created a little better than you!
3. DUDE, UM, YOU SUCK AS A WRITER!
Who would dare say such a thing? Well, you know the old cliche, you are your own worst critic. This will be the most discouraging voice you will ever hear and learning to silence your inner critic is key in finally getting your vision to come alive. Get each and every one of those words down and then ask the voice what is thinks…but only listen a little!
