Objective: Students will identify theme as a central idea. They will be able to state theme in terms of a subject and a predicate.
Instructional Block
Activator: Answer the question: What influence do adults have on children? Provide examples of positive and negative adult role models and share/discuss with learning partner.
Mini lesson: The teacher will introduce the theme of Scout’s moral education. Teach the concept that the education of children is a transition from innocence to knowledge. Examples from the Activator will be used to model thematic statements containing a subject and predicate.
Learning Activity:
Students will read the first chapter and highlight evidence on the theme of innocence to adult-hood. They will be required to find at least three quotes and be able to explain why they think those quotes show this theme.
Wrap Up:
Learning partners will write the theme including a subject and predicate on strips of paper and display them in the classroom
Homework:
Read chapter two.
Write a brief summary of the main events in the first two chapters.
